Craniosacral Therapy

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on treatment that focuses on releasing tension deep in the body to relieve pain and improve health. It works by supporting the craniosacral system — the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

Using light touch (generally no more than the weight of a nickel), practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system. Cransiosacral Therapy encourages the body’s own natural healing processes and helps bring the nervous system back into balance.

Basic Anatomy

The craniosacral system includes:

  • Cranium: The bones of the skull, which house and protect the brain.

  • Sacrum: A triangular bone at the base of the spine, forming the back part of the pelvis.

  • Meninges: The protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

  • Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF): A clear fluid that cushions the brain and spinal cord and helps maintain a stable environment for the central nervous system.

This system has a subtle rhythmic motion — similar to a pulse — that can be felt throughout the body. Skilled practitioners can detect disturbances or restrictions in this rhythm and use CST techniques to gently release them.

What to Expect

CST sessions are typically done fully clothed on a massage table. Your therapist will use gentle hand placements on your head, neck, spine, and sacrum. Most clients find the experience deeply relaxing, and some enter a meditative or dream-like state.
